Silicone sealants are great products for wet area and hygiene applications such as sealing bathtubs, showers and sinks to tile and vinyl surfaces.
Silicone sealants can be quite a finicky product to work with, especially when it comes to applying and tooling them into place. This is because they're not water soluble like latex caulk, meaning you can’t sponge them or use a wet finger to get them into place.
There is however a nice little trick…
An ammonia free foaming glass cleaner can be used to assist you with silicone application.
When you have finished applying the silicone, spray glass cleaner over the fresh bead then use paper towels to remove any excess sealant. The glass cleaner acts as a barrier, preventing the silicone from sticking to any unwanted surfaces.
When you have finished tooling the silicone into place, don’t try to wipe off and remove the excess glass cleaner yet. Simply let it dry because if you try to wipe it off, more times than not you are going to end up with paper towel into your fresh bead of silicone, ruining your great work.
So there you have it, how to apply the perfect bead of silicone!
